On 31st May, Dr. Guo Ce, Economic and Commercial Counselor of the Chinese Embassy in Kenya, attended the celebrations marking the 2nd anniversary of the launching of the Mombasa-Nairobi SGR and delivered a speech. Hon. James Macharia, CS for Transport, Infrastructure, Housing and Urban Development, Hon. Esther Koimett, PS for Transport, and Hon.Philip Mainga, Acting MD for Kenya Railways Corporation attended the ceremony.
Dr. Guo Ce firstly congratulated SGR for its two-year-old birthday. He said that the Mombasa-Nairobi SGR, as a century infrastructural project and one of the benchmarks of BRI, has promoted the economic and social development of Kenya and brought along tangible benefits to the people of both countries,deepening friendship of two sides as well.
Hon. Macharia said that the Mombasa-Nairobi SGR has successfully eased the pressure on Kenya’s transportation, spurred economic growth, and stimulated the tourism. It also provided new opportunities for Kenyans through job creation and technology transfer. Since its launching, SGR has offered service to 3 million passengers and transported 440,000 TEUs of goods. The hotel occupancy rate has increased from 50% to 90% after the operation of SGR.
Driver licenses were handed over to 11 Kenyans(including four female drivers) by Hon. Macharia.
Mr. Dimi Kimoni, a Kenyan passenger who took the Madaraka Express 222 times in past two years, was also awarded the“Most Loyal Traveler” medal at the ceremony.
